Even the British army, which could boast that it was the most mechanised of the belligerent forces, relied largely on horse power for its transport, much of it organised by the Army Service Corps: by November , the British army had almost , horses, which helped to distrib tons of meat tons of bread each month. Much of the field artillery in infantry divisions was horse-drawn, at least eight horses per gun, plus spare teams. Horses in World War II were used by the belligerent nations for transportation of troops, artillery, materiel, and, to a lesser extent, in mobile cavalry troops. The role of horses for each nation depended on its military strategy and state of economy and was most pronounced in German and Soviet ground forces. Over the course of the war both Germany and the Soviet Union employed more than six.
