King Arthur (Welsh: Brenin Arthur, Cornish: Arthur Gernow, Breton: Roue Arzhur) was a legendary British leader who, according to medieval histories and romances, led the defence of Britain against Saxon invaders in the late 5th and early 6th centuries. The details of Arthur's story are mainly composed of folklore and literary invention, and modern historians generally agree that he is. Reprinted in Arthurian Sources 5 (Texts: Collections ) supra. There is an abbreviated text of Annales Cambriae in Arthur of Britain (Texts: Collections ; ) supra. There is also a complete Latin text, as well as an English translation, in British History and The Welsh Annals () supra.
Sir Thomas Malory: his 15th century work is definitive medieval British Arthurian myth, and drawing from most of the previous works. I don't know the modern landscape of Arthurian mythology well, but I would recommend Tennyson's Idylls of the King for a Victorian version of the Arthurian myth, and T. H. White's Once and Future King is a must-read. But each volume in an Arthurian library offers some insight into why these stories continue to enchant the world.
